My venue has said that any DJ's using MP3's must have a ProDub license. Is this true?

Yes. The ProDub License is provided by MCPS and the PRS. It is a new license for the professional use of music that has been copied onto an MP3 player or laptop (it allows DJ's and other entertainers to convert compact discs to MP3 files for professional and semi professional use)  It is unlikley that venues will be looking for/checking the ProDub license status of Dj's in 2008, however it will probably become more common in 2009.

If in doubt, if you are using a DJ who is using an MP3 player or a laptop to generate the music at your event it will make sense to check if they have the relevant license. If not, try and book a DJ who holds this license already. You should then have no problems in the future as it becomes more well known and possible a requirement in certain venues (just as public liability insurance & PAT tested equipment is) Our license was granted on the 6th of August 2008 (No. PD-0000180)
